Breast Cancer Awareness Month:

Don't Just Wear Pink—Take Action

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it's a great reminder to make your health a priority. While pink ribbons help spread awareness, the most important steps are knowing your risk, staying up to date on screenings, and paying attention to changes in your body. At Ohana Medical, we believe preventive care starts with knowing your health and having a doctor who takes the time to listen.

When Should You Get a Mammogram?

For women at average risk, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends a mammogram every two years from ages 40 through 74. Women with a family history of breast cancer, certain genetic risk factors, or other medical considerations may need a different screening plan.

Not sure when to start or how often to get screened? Talk with your primary care provider about what's right for you.

Know Your Body

Screening is important, but it's also helpful to recognize changes in your breasts. Contact your healthcare provider if you notice:

  • A new lump or thickening
  • Changes in breast size or shape
  • Skin dimpling, redness, or swelling
  • New nipple changes or unexpected discharge
  • Persistent or unusual breast pain

Many breast changes are not cancer, but new or concerning changes should be evaluated rather than ignored.

Everyday Habits Matter

While no lifestyle change can guarantee cancer prevention, healthy habits support your overall well-being and may help reduce certain breast cancer risks. Try to make time for regular physical activity, eat a balanced diet, maintain a healthy weight, limit alcohol, and avoid smoking. Small, consistent choices can make a meaningful difference in your long-term health.

Don't Let Cost Keep You From Screening

If you've been putting off a mammogram because of cost, check with local imaging centers about cash-pay options and screening specials. Some centers may offer reduced-price mammograms, including $99 specials October - December. Confirm current pricing, and availability directly with the imaging center before scheduling.

Your Health Is Worth It

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about more than wearing pink. It's about taking action, asking questions, and making preventive care a priority.

Know your risk. Schedule your screening. Don't ignore changes.

At Ohana Medical, we believe healthcare should be personal. Having a primary care physician who knows you and your history can help you navigate screenings, understand your risk factors, and feel confident about your next steps.
